Frequently Asked Questions
What is the latest KeepKey firmware version?
7.14.1. It is open source (LGPLv3), reproducibly built, CI-tested, and signed. See Firmware for the CI results, build instructions, and how to verify a release.
Does KeepKey support Solana, TRON, and TON?
Yes — all three are natively supported as of firmware 7.14.1. See Supported Coins.
How many coins does KeepKey support?
KeepKey natively signs on 11 chains (Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Cosmos, THORChain, Maya, EOS, Nano, Solana, TRON, TON) plus the Bitcoin family, and handles any ERC-20 token or EVM chain through Ethereum. Full list: Supported Coins.
Does KeepKey have a mobile app?
Yes. The KeepKey mobile app is a read-only companion for iOS and Android — view your portfolio and generate receive addresses. It pairs with the desktop app and holds no private keys, so it cannot sign transactions on its own, and losing your phone never puts funds at risk.
Does KeepKey have a Secure Element?
No — by design. KeepKey uses a general-purpose microcontroller with no dedicated secure element, trading that for fully open-source, auditable firmware. What that means for the threat model — and the compensating controls (signed firmware, on-device verification, and an optional passphrase) — is covered honestly on the Security page.
Has KeepKey ever been hacked?
Every publicly disclosed attack that extracts a seed requires physical possession of the device; none let a remote attacker drain an up-to-date wallet. The full, sourced vulnerability history — with CVE IDs and the firmware that fixed each — is on the Security page.
Is the KeepKey firmware open source?
Yes. The firmware is open source under the LGPLv3 license, reproducibly built, and CI-tested. You can read every line and verify a release’s SHA-256 hash before flashing. See Firmware.
How do I update my firmware?
The desktop application checks for updates automatically and verifies the firmware hash during the update. See Firmware Updates.
How is KeepKey different from a hot wallet like MetaMask?
With the browser extension, KeepKey works with any EVM dapp the way MetaMask does — but every signature is approved on the hardware device, so your private keys never touch the browser or the internet.
Is KeepKey discontinued?
No. KeepKey is actively developed and maintained. The latest firmware release is 7.14.1, which added native Solana, TRON, and TON support. Because KeepKey is non-custodial and open source, your funds live in your recovery phrase regardless of any company’s status.
