# Coming back to an old KeepKey

Maybe you last used your KeepKey years ago, with ShapeShift, the old KeepKey Desktop app (for example version 3.2.1) or KeepKey Client. Your coins are still on the blockchain, and your recovery phrase controls them. Here's how to get going again.

1. **Install the current KeepKey Desktop** from [keepkey.com/desktop](https://keepkey.com/desktop). Its installer files and welcome message still say "KeepKey Vault". It's the same app. See [Install](/docs/desktop/install).
2. **Quit and uninstall the old app.** Old KeepKey software can hold the USB connection so the new app can't see your device. See [Remove old KeepKey software](/docs/desktop/troubleshooting#3-remove-old-keepkey-software-that-can-grab-your-device).
3. **Connect your KeepKey and update it.** Old devices get a bootloader update first, then a firmware update. KeepKey Desktop walks you through both. See [Updating a KeepKey that hasn't been used in years](/docs/desktop/firmware#updating-a-keepkey-that-hasnt-been-used-in-years).
4. **Unlock it with your PIN.** Forgot it? See [Forgot KeepKey PIN](/docs/desktop/troubleshooting#forgot-keepkey-pin). Wrong PINs don't wipe the device.
5. **If coins you expect are missing,** run **Audit** from the portfolio. See [My coins are missing or show 0](/docs/desktop/troubleshooting#my-coins-are-missing-or-show-0).

## Can I still use ShapeShift?

Yes. KeepKey Desktop has a **ShapeShift** tab that opens ShapeShift (app.shapeshift.com). If ShapeShift says your firmware is too old, update it in KeepKey Desktop first. KeepKey has been independent of ShapeShift for several years.
